Annual Credit Report – This freebie should be on everyone’s list. This is the only "legitimate" source for obtaining your free credit report. This is the government-sponsored site that allows you to obtain one report per year from each of the three major credit bureaus. This is not a service or website associated with University of Kentucky.


DEBT 

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act – Families and individuals are losing jobs or having their hours cut back and many are falling behind in making monthly credit payments. As a result, many creditors are using outside collectors to collect past payments due or are selling bad debt at pennies on the dollar to professional debt collection businesses. Consumers have rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.


HOUSING RESOURCES 

KY Home Foreclosure and Housing Resources, if you are wishing to purchase a home or facing foreclosure, there are a variety of KY specific resources available. Housing counselors are also available to assist. 

KY Homeownship Protection Center - The Kentucky Homeownership Protection Center provides a centralized location for information on public services to assist Kentuckians in keeping their homes.  Homeowners can find information on the foreclosure process, utility assistance and home repair assistance to make smart choices and avoid losing their homes. 

Federal Housing Adminstration (FHA) - U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) has helped over 34 million people secure the dream of homeownership since 1934. Backed by the federal government, FHA provides safe mortgage insurance solutions while expanding its housing education and outreach efforts year after year. 

Federal Mortgage Foreclosure Resources - Foreclosures are increasing nationwide, and the federal government has established online information and resources to help consumers. A wealth of resources can be found to assist consumers in avoiding foreclosure and/ or seeking solutions to foreclosure issues.


LOANS 

Check Advance Loans: Are They Right for You? – FAM-RHF.119 - This low reading-level publication warns consumers about the pitfalls associated with check advance loans. Offers alternative solutions for borrowing money and advice about how to avoid the need for such loans in the future. 

Co-Signing a Loan: Better Think Twice – FAM-RHF.120 -  Low reading-level publication warns consumers about the potential risks involved with co-signing a loan for a friend or relative. Offers advice to those who do choose to co-sign a loan. 

Don’t Make “Cold Checks” a Disaster – FAM-RHF.136  - This fact sheet deals with the common consumer practice of floating checks until payday, and provides information on the Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, which makes it almost certain that checks will clear within hours, rather than days. Many unsuspecting consumers are likely to bounce checks as a result, and this publication helps consumers avoid what could become a personal catastrophe. 

Is Rent-to-Own Right for You? – FAM-RHF.107 – Making choices to purchase items through rent-to-own options can be very expensive. This fact sheet gives tips for making good credit decisions. 

Federal Reserve Board – Foreclosure Resources for Consumers – provides information and links to agencies and organizations that can help consumers who are having difficulty making their mortgage payment. This is not a service or website associated with University of Kentucky.

MANAGING DEBT 

Assistance.ky.gov – As the national and global economy continues to remain uncertain and challenging, Governor Steve Beshear unveiled a new Web site. This one-stop-shop provides readily accessible links for struggling Kentuckians to help find critical resources in tough times, such as health insurance and home mortgage information. 

How Others can Help you Get out of Debt – FCS 5- 107 - When the bills pile up and you can’t seem to dig your way out, several options may help you manage financial difficulties. This publication outlines setting up your own debt management and/or visiting a financial counselor or seek legal assistance with your financial obligations.
